Underground DART project set for revival after being shelved a decade ago

The underground DART project is reportedly set to be revived after being shelved more than a decade ago.

According to the Irish Times, plans to build the €4.5 billion underground line to link the DART with Heuston Station will be resuscitated by the National Transport Authority.

The original line planned was to extend from Connolly Station to Heuston Station and out past Inchicore into West Dublin.

Dart Underground is a proposal to link Heuston, Pearse, and the Docklands stations with Stephen's Green by tunnel. (National Transport Authority)

But the new plans will reportedly see a shorter line, linking the Docklands to the DART in the city centre and then on to Heuston, being pursued.

The plans were one of the "big three" rail projects planned for Dublin in boom times, along with the Luas Cross City and the Metro.

The original plan - by far the priciest of the three - was dropped in 2011.
