Underdale school student allegedly armed with hammer arrested as police use capsicum spray

Police were called to Underdale High School on Wednesday afternoon. (ABC News: Michael Clements)

An Adelaide school student was subdued with capsicum spray yesterday after he allegedly threatened another student with a hammer.

Underdale High School was temporarily locked down during the incident, which resulted in the teenager being charged with carrying an offensive weapon.

Police said they were called to the school about 2:40pm and "located a 16-year-old boy who was armed with a hammer".

After using capsicum spray to subdue the boy, from Mile End, he was arrested and charged.

He will appear in Adelaide Youth Court next month.

Police said no-one was injured in the incident.

Around the same time, Hewett Primary School was reportedly locked down after an armed robbery at a local pharmacy.

Police said a man armed with a gun approached staff and then stole cash from the shop on Kingfisher Drive, near the local school.

On Facebook, the school thanked parents for their support.

"Our students were outstanding throughout today," it said.

"Well done to all the staff and teachers for acting so quickly and keeping everyone safe," a commenter responded.

The man, of slim build and aged in his mid to late 20s, was wearing light grey shorts and an orange and black top underneath a grey hoodie, police said.
