Under My Skin by James Dawson - review

James Dawson, Under My Skin

This is a very peculiar and original book because the story line is one that I have never read about. It's about a 17 year old girl called Sally Feather who isn't very popular in school and although she has an amazing singing voice, she has a lack of confidence. When chosen to be one of the main characters in the school play, she is both shocked and horrified that she must play alongside Melody Vine- the most popular, pretty and stuck up girl in school.

When I started reading this I thought to myself, 'Oh no… Not another typical book about high school' but then I was proved wrong when the book suddenly turns really dark.

Sally encounters a homeless man who runs after her and in order to escape, she goes into a strange tattoo parlour known as the House of Skin. There, she is shown around by Rosita, a worker in the tattoo parlour, and whilst looking at tattoos, Sally spots Molly Sue. Molly Sue is a beautiful yet eccentric looking tattoo of a woman and this immediately makes Sally consider getting her. And after much persuasion by Rosita, she does.

The next day Molly Sue starts talking to her, much to Sally's horror. It turns out that the tattoo can hear and see everything Sally does.

At this point, things aren't so bad because Molly Sue helps Sally gain the confidence she needs and gets her to have a complete makeover which immediately increases her popularity. But this happiness of Sally's is short-lived because soon Molly Sue starts to take over Sally's body and makes her do things that she doesn't want to. This makes Sally do everything possible to try and get rid of Molly Sue. Will she succeed?

From a typical high school book, it quickly turns into something much much darker and more interesting.

There is so much in store for the reader when reading this book. It is almost impossible to figure out what Molly Sue will do next. I would highly recommend reading this book because I absolutely loved it, especially the really unexpected ending.

This also wasn't a very long book so if you are looking for an amazing yet short read, I would say read this because you definitely won't regret it.
