Under-fire Virgil van Dijk warns team-mates about 'big job' against Newcastle United

Virgil van Dijk admits he is braced for a "tough" night against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

The Dutchman was at the centre of a social media storm after Liverpool's 3-0 defeat against Barcelona this week as he was accused of switching off to allow Luis Suarez score the opening goal at the Nou Camp.

Indeed, the highly respected Arsene Wenger pointed the finger of blame in the £75million defender's direction after the game during his role as a pundit with beINsports.

But looking ahead to Newcastle, Van Dijk said: "Obviously now the focus is on Newcastle which is a big job and after that we try everything to go through," said Van Dijk.

"It is a totally different challenge.

"It will be tough up there and not easy to get a result but we will try everything.

"We have to stay confident.

"This (result) should not put us down or anything and there is plenty of positives to take even though there are things to improve."

Wenger's comments went viral on Wednesday night when he said: "It is very interesting because Van Dijk covers but he should go with Suarez to cover that ball.

"Especially from a central defender with that quality, he lets him go.

"From the start, his position is not bad but he refuses to respond."
