Unconscious woman rescued from isolated area of Northumberland coast by quad bike

An unconscious woman was taken to an ambulance by quad bike and trailer in an early morning rescue at the Northumberland coast.

Howick Coastguard rescue team were sent to Cullernose Point, between Craster and Howick, by the coastguard at 3.37am on Saturday to help the woman.

When the team arrived, they carried out casualty care until the arrival of an ambulance.

The Amble Coastguard team were also called in to help just before 4.45am.

Due to the remote location, the team had to use their 4x4 to transport the ambulance crew and equipment to the scene.

However, due to the woman's condition it was necessary to evacuate her by stretcher.

As the casualty was being prepared to be moved, an offer was made by a nearby farmer to use his quad bike and trailer to take her back to the ambulance.

A spokesperson for Howick Coastguard Rescue Team said: "This allowed us to transport the casualty quicker than a carry off and enabled the ambulance crew to transport the casualty to hospital in a quicker time.

"Many thanks to the local farmer for his help and also the fisherman who looked after the lady until our arrival. We wish her a speedy recovery.

"Remember, in an emergency at sea or on the coast, or if you think someone may be in difficulty, ALWAYS call the Coastguard by dialling 999."

The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment and the coastguard teams were stood down.
