Unconscious man who fell down riverbank rescued

Emergency teams rushed to save a man who fell down the banks of the River Croal in Bolton.

Residents reported seeing several ambulances, a police car and vehicles from Bolton's Mountain Rescue Team close to Moses Gate Country Park, off Hall Lane, at around 3pm.

The man is thought to have had a medical episode and was unconscious in a difficult to reach location on a steep banking.

The rescuers managed to traverse the slope and bring the injured man out for treatment.

Steven Fletcher, team leader for the Mountain Rescue Team, explained that it had been a busy day, with calls to two locations at the same time.

He said: "We had two incidents in quick succession, at 2.48pm to an unconscious male near to Moses Gate country park and at 2.52pm to a sledger on the moor above Tockholes, near Darwen.

"15 team members attended Moses Gate and worked alongside the North West Ambulance Service crews and Hazardous Area Response Team to extricate the casualty from a difficult-to-access location."

The man was taken to hospital although his condition is currently unknown.

Another 15 members of the team were sent to Darwen and rescued a 29-year-old man who suffered serious foot injuries while sledging.

He was always taken to hospital in an ambulance.
