The uncle of Derlis González, who scored Paraguay’s winning penalty in the Copa América quarter-final against Brazil, died of a heart attack while celebrating the victory, it has been reported.

FC Basel midfielder González scored Paraguay’s penalty in normal time before taking his chance from the spot to secure a famous victory over the five-time world champions in Concepción. However, his delight was short-lived after being informed that his uncle Irrazábal Manuel had passed away after watching the match at his home in Paraguay.

“Why today uncle? Why? You left me after a heart attack because I gave you so much joy and so much happiness. I can’t believe it,” González wrote on Twitter.

“He’s my friend, I consider my brother, my cousin’s husband was,” González’s father Simon told Paraguayan newspaper Ultima Hora.

Paraguay are due to face Argentina in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
