Uncertainty over whether felled trees in Dumbarton High Street will be replaced

Trees have been felled in Dumbarton High Street leading to uncertainty over whether they will be replaced.

West Dunbartonshire Council took the decision to remove the trees after an inspection.

The local authority said consideration is being given over whether they can be replaced.

A Dumbarton man contacted the Lennox Herald and said the felling left hazardous stumps in the middle of the high street.

He said: “What moron would cut a tree down in a pedestrian thoroughfare leaving a 6” trip hazard sticking up to catch the unwary or partially sighted.

“Walking through the High Street a friend nearly caught his foot on one of the stumps.”

A council spokeswoman said safety cones have now been placed around them.

She said: “Following a recent inspection which identified these trees had unfortunately died, they were subsequently removed.

“Safety cones have been placed around the stumps to warn pedestrians while consideration is given to the best option for the area including whether trees can be replaced.”
