Uncertainty over future of Victoria Centre shop as retailer announces closure of 40 stores across the UK

A video game retailer which has a branch at the intu Victoria Centre has announced it intends to close up to 40 stores.

Bosses at GAME made the announcement on Thursday, January 9 and confirmed most of the shops affected were in intu and New River shopping centres.

A total of 13 sites have so far been served with a notice of closure, including the store in Mansfield's Four Seasons shopping centre.

GAME was bought by Mike Ashley's Sports Direct in a £52 million deal last June and the site closures announced so far include Derby, Norwich Chapelfield and Lakeside in Essex.

The retailer said it intends to announce further closure notices "in the near future".

A spokesperson for GAME said: "We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations which could lead to a number of job losses.

"However, we are facing a challenging retail market and GAME with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents."

Some department store groups which Mike Ashley has previously taken over, such as House of Fraser, have before fallen into turmoil following failures to come to alleged rent agreements with intu.

The House of Fraser store in question, however, was saved after a last minute deal in May.

GAME has been contacted for further information regarding the intu Victoria Centre outlet.
