Uncapped Wales star looking to 'smack some boys about' on his debut against Scotland

Uncapped Wales prop WillGriff John is looking to 'smack some boys about' when he makes his debut against Scotland this weekend.

The 20 stone, 6ft 2" tight-head prop represented Wales at the age grade level and has been making a name for himself in the Gallagher Premiership over the last three years.

At the age of 27, he is a late-comer to the international scene but is looking forward to making up for lost time.

When asked what he brings to the party, he smiled: “I’m rather large so just a bit of physicality really. I’m just hoping to smack some boys about.

“He [Wales boss Wayne Pivac] just said it’s a big job for me. I’m starting for my first cap in such a big game.

“He just said to do what I do week in week out for Sale. It’s about me ensuring a solid scrum and as I said smack a few people.”

There have been question marks over John's fitness levels and he has struggled with injury during the early part of the Six Nations campaign.

But he is a useful ball-carrier in the loose, with his biggest strength coming at the scrum.

Throughout the Six Nations, Wales' scrum has creaked and he starts at tight-head on Saturday, hoping to deliver on his reputation of being a solid scrummager.

“I suppose that’s what I’ve enjoyed at Sale. Being around a lot of Saffers and Dorian West," he said.

“Hopefully I will be able to bring in some physicality in the front-row.

“I wouldn’t say it’s [the scrum] been vulnerable. It’s down to the opinion of the referee at the end of the day.

“You win some you lose some and that’s pretty much all you can do but I wouldn’t say it’s been vulnerable. Dillon and Leon have both done very well as have the looseheads.

“I think it’s a lot to do with who can seem to be more dominant. That’s pretty much it.”
