Unbelievable pictures show how Storm Christoph caused flooding and chaos across city

A series of unbelievable pictures taken across Merseyside show how flooding and extreme weather was caused by Storm Christoph.

Heavy downpours were seen all across the city on Wednesday with the showers causing flooding on main roads and railway lines.

Chaos was seen on the local motorways with a number of crashes being caused as a result of the storm.

In Childwall, drivers took their chances and were seen making their way through the floods on Queens Drive.

St Helens saw a significant amount of flooding as well with multiple roads being closed to traffic by the emergency services.

In Halewood emergency services were called to Lower Road after a driver became trapped under a bridge.

Fire crews and rescuers waded into the water to try and free the man as a passerby offered up his tractor to help.

Olly Harrison tweeted an unbelievable video of crews using his vehicle to bring the man to safety.

The footage showed a life vest being placed around the driver as he was moved from the roof, through the water and onto the trailer of the tractor.

On Peasley Cross Lane, in St Helens, road closures were put in place after a car became stuck in the flooding.

Images sent to the ECHO, show a car submerged and stuck in the water close to Totally Wicked Stadium, under the bridge on Peasley Cross Lane.

On the M57 a driver lost control and flipped their van it on its side after aquaplaning.

Police were called to a crash, which involved a silver van and a black car, on the motorway on Wednesday.

No one was injured during the incident which left both vehicles embedded in trees lining the carriageway, with the van flipped on its side.

Drivers are being urged to be careful when driving in adverse conditions.

The Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "Please slow down and drive to the conditions.

"We have just finished dealing with this RTC on the M57 where one driver lost control after aquaplaning on standing water in lane three. Fortunately on this occasion nobody was hurt."

North West Motorway Police also tweeted advice out to road users.

They said: "Good Evening, if you don't have to go out please stay at home this weather is not going to get any better and there is flooding all over not just on motorway network."

Earlier on Wednesday, the Met Office upgraded the weather warning for Merseyside to Amber, meaning there is a possible danger to life.

Rain associated with Storm Christoph will persist for the rest of Wednesday and into early Thursday, with some more intense rainfall possible before it clears.

Strong winds will accompany the rain at times and may add to travelling difficulties across higher and more exposed routes.

Maghull, Kirkby, Huyton, Widnes and Speke have been highlighted as areas covered by the amber alert.

Simon Partridge, a Met Office forecaster, explained: "It's not a traditional sort of storm, it's going to be windy but it's not based on the wind strength at all, it's really down to the disruption that's being caused by rain.

"There are already parts of Cumbria that have already seen over 80mm of rain since midnight on Tuesday and there's a large number of places that have seen 50mm, and we are going to see further rain over the next 24 to 36 hours."

What to expect

  • Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • A good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads
  • Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely
  • Heavy, wet snow may lead to some additional problems on roads overnight.

Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong added: “Storm Christoph will bring a mix of notable weather hazards across the UK over the next few days.

"Some locations in central Northern England and Wales could see a month’s rain fall in just a couple of days, with up to 200mm possible over higher ground.

"These amounts of rainfall present a real threat of flooding and people should keep a close eye on flood warnings from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and SEPA.

“As the system moves away into the North Sea on Wednesday night and Thursday morning we start to see the potential for hazardous snow as cold air is pulled across the UK from the north west.

"Notable accumulations of snow, up to 30cm in places, are possible in parts of Scotland.

"With the cold air in place across the whole of the UK temperatures will drop as we move into the weekend with a return to overnight frosts for many.”
