'Unbelievable' - Joe Cole's verdict on Edinson Cavani signing for Chelsea

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole says it would be "unbelievable" if his old club could secure the services of Edinson Cavani this month.

Cavani has been linked with Chelsea as they try and get a loan deal over the line for the Paris Saint-Germain striker.

According to recent reports, the Blues are willing to pay a loan fee of £5million and would cover the striker's £360,000-a-week wages until his contract expires at the end of the campaign, but face competition from Atletico Madrid.

And although Cole would be delighted to see a move for the forward come to fruition, he believes his old club have no reason to panic as their current squad is doing just fine.

"I think he wasn't expecting to [sign anyone in January]. We only got the transfer ban lifted in December," Cole told BT Sport.

"I think Roman's pockets might be burning a little bit. But it is important you get the right players. Who is available in January and who can come in?

"There is talk of Cavani. I think if you can get him through the door that would be unbelievable.

"When it is as tight as this, Jake, the difference is who can get a Cavani in. A proven goalscorer who can get them over the line.

"If Frank takes this Chelsea team to fourth in his first opportunity in the Premier League, it is an unbelievable job.

"But there is no need to panic because the lads are doing great."
