Unbelievable Jeff! Super sub scores twice then makes goalkeeping cameo to help side end nightmare run

A super sub inspired a struggling Scots football team to their first win in 21 matches - after scoring twice then filling in for their crocked goalkeeper.

Irvine Vics star Ryan Singleton's Roy of the Rovers style performance came in a crunch Junior football clash against relegation rivals Petershill this afternoon.

The central defender- just back from injury - was thrown into action as a makeshift target man early in the second half with West Region Championship bottom dogs Vics trailing 1-0.

Within two minutes, he hauled them level when he headed home Jordan Craig's free-kick at the back post.

Six minutes later he fired them in front from the penalty spot after strike partner Joy Goma was brought down in the box by Petershill defender Michael Hardie.

But any hopes of a dream hat-trick were soon dashed when Vics goalkeeper Jamie Walker was forced off with concussion after an accidental collision with Petershill goal scorer Roddy Paterson.

With no back up keeper on the bench, Vics assistant manager Mark McCann ordered Singleton to take the gloves for the remaining 10 minutes of regulation time.

And as Petershill pushed hard for an equaliser, he came to his teammates rescue with two crucial saves.

Vics saw out a further 10 minutes of stoppage time to hold on for a 2-1 victory - their first since August 10.

Singleton said: "I don't think you'll ever see that again!

"When Jamie got injured I really didn't want to go in. I wanted the hat-trick.

"If we'd got another penalty I'd have been up there wanting to take it!

"That was my first game back today. I had an operation a month ago and this was my first game in a month.

"It's not a bad way to come back."

Singleton is now hoping the result, which lifts Vics to third bottom in the table, can spark a revival.

"We've got another team that's down the league next week so it's a chance to get another three points, he said.

"If we can beat the teams around us we've got a chance."
