'Unbeatable relationship' key to Nottingham Forest hopes of signing ex-France Under-21 international

Nottingham Forest are in pole position to sign Almeria defender Mathieu Peybernes, reports in Spain claim.

Peybernes had been expected to join La Liga side Getafe this summer, but now, the Reds have jumped to the top of a queue which also includes Championship rivals Swansea City, Marca say.

According to the report, Forest’s hierarchy enjoy a positive relationship with Almeria owner Turki Al-Sheikh, which has helped smooth a deal, while the 29-year-old central defender is said to be keen on a move to the City Ground.

Forest do have previous transfer dealings with the Spanish club, having sold Arvin Appiah to Almeria for £8m last September.

The Toulouse-born former France Under-21 international is contracted with the Spanish outfit until next summer, but an initial loan deal could see the defender move to England, with a £900,000 fee agreed at the end of his temporary stay.

Peybernes recently spoke of his desire to test himself in England, adding to speculation that a link-up with compatriot Sabri Lamouchi could be in the offing.

“The French have always had a notable connection with England,” he told Get French Football News.

“Playing there, for many French footballers, like for me, is a dream.

“Along with La Liga, the Premier League is one of the best competitions in the world and as a competitive professional you always want to test yourself in the best competitions.

“If the opportunity to go play in England presents itself then I would be interested.”
