'Unauthorised' encampment appears near Newport sports pitch

An "unauthorised" encampment has appeared in the car park of a popular Newport sports venue, police have confirmed.

The encampment of caravans is currently parked up at the Newport International Sports Village, Gwent Police said on Wednesday.

The caravans have appeared four months after local residents raised concerns regarding an unauthorised encampment at the same location.

Newport Live, who is responsible for the International Sports Village, confirmed it is working alongside Gwent Police to manage the situation.

It is the latest occurrence of a series of incidents involving unauthorised encampments in a public space in Newport.

In September, Duffryn residents stated that Sandpiper Park was left in a "disgusting mess" after 30 caravans were pitched there.

Newport City Council later installed a metal barrier at the park to prevent caravans from pitching up there.

In a separate incident in September, residents reacted with frustration after another caravan encampment set up outside a medical centre in St Brides.

On September 23, WalesOnline then reported that Lliswerry residents "raised concerns" after an encampment appeared near the International Sports Village.

Discussing the most recent encampment at the site, a spokesperson for Newport Live said: "We are currently dealing with an unauthorised encampment at a car park on Newport International Sports Village.

"We are working with Gwent Police and the local authorities to manage the situation, in line with Welsh Government guidelines."

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of an encampment at the Newport International Sports Village site.

"We are currently in liaison with those present, as well as those responsible for the site.”
