Spain own goal: Watch goalkeeper Unai Simon’s huge blunder against Croatia in Euros last-16 tie

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon was responsible for a truly shocking own goal during Monday evening’s Euro 2020 last-16 clash against Croatia.

The Athletic Bilbao custodian completely seemed to take his eye off a routine pass back from a short way into his own half from Barcelona midfielder Pedri in the 20th minute of the knockout tie at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium.

With his thoughts no doubt focused on quickly making the next pass, Simon opened up his body and thrust out a right boot to control a relatively tame ball that had admittedly bounced and spun, but could only watch on in horror as it then rolled over the top of his foot and away into the back of the net.

To make matters worse for Luis Enrique’s Spain, the remarkable own goal came after they had spurned two excellent early chances in the Danish capital through Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke and Juventus striker Alvaro Morata.

Thankfully for Simon, his blushes were spared before half-time when Pablo Sarabia hammered in to ensure the scores were level 1-1 at the interval.
