Unai Emery waxes lyrical about Calum Chambers but reveals the tactical instructions he ignored

Unai Emery lauded the performance of Calum Chambers but revealed the Arsenal defender ignored some of his tactical instructions.

The versatile Gunners centre-back registered three assists as they beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Chambers started the match at right-back before switching over to left after Kieran Tierney was taken off after lasting 77 minutes on his full debut.

The former Fulham loanee was also called into action against Aston Villa at the weekend after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off and became the hero by grabbing Arsenal's equaliser which sparked their dramatic comeback.

After another strong showing against Nottingham Forest, Chambers has done his hopes of earning a place in Emery's Premier League team no harm.

The Gunners boss was quick to heap praise on the former Southampton prodigy for his versatility and character.

He did, however, joke about Chambers had ignored his tactical instructions by bombing forward down the left-hand side.

“He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right-back, centre back, left-back like tonight, and if we can use him in the midfield also,” Emery said about Chambers after the final-whistle.

Unai Emery on Arsenal win against Nottingham Forest

“His performance is starting with his attitude and his attitude is amazing.

“After that is his best position, but tonight, for example, I was telling him, when he was playing left-back, be calm here, help and support Bukayo [Saka], give the ball to Dani Ceballos and he was overlapping a lot of times with Bukayo!

“He did one very good pass for the goal with Nelson. He didn't listen to me!”

Although Maitland-Niles is available, having served his suspension against Forest, Chambers has made a strong case to start at right-back for Arsenal when they face Manchester United on Monday night.

Hector Bellerin made his return to first-team action against Forest, replacing Tierney, but after only 15 minutes of action, Emery confirmed it was unlikely that he would risk throwing the Spaniard into a game of such high magnitude after such little football.

When asked whether Bellerin was ready to play 90 minutes on Monday night, Emery said: "I think no. Maybe in his mind yes. But we need to also listen to the doctor's. Tonight is the first day and minutes, we are going to share some minutes with the U23s.

"He's going to be progressively, it depends how he's feeling. In his mind he's feeling very well. The first minutes were amazing for him. We are going to use Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] and Calum Chambers to help us in this position and also with his attitude.

"The most important with him is his attitude and his desire to help us."
