Villarreal manager Unai Emery is the leading candidate to become cash-rich Newcastle United 's next boss - according to multiple reports.
Former Celtic target Eddie Howe is also understood to be on the radar of the Magpies but it now appears the ex-Arsenal man is out in front to take the reins at St James Park.
And Sky Sports' north east correspondent Keith Downie believes the Spaniard is closing in Newcastle as the big spenders look to get prepared ahead of a defining January transfer window.
He said: "Unai Emery is under serious consideration for the Newcastle United vacancy. There is a feeling the 49-year-old has unfinished business in the Premier League since being sacked by Arsenal in 2019. Newcastle hoping to have a new boss in place by Brighton match on Saturday.
"Newcastle hoping to have their new manager in charge by weekend. Unai Emery the target. The former PSG & Arsenal boss turns 50 tomorrow."
Newcastle are currently languishing in 19th place and are six points adrift of safety following a rotten start to the season under former boss Steve Bruce and interim manager Graeme Jones.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was among the betting favourites when the odds were initially set.
