Unai Emery stands by Gabriel Martinelli stance despite Arsenal brace

Unai Emery reiterated that Gabriel Martinelli is not a striker - despite the teenager scoring twice in Arsenal's Europa League rout of Standard Liege.

Playing in a central role, Martinelli scored a quickfire double set up another as he inspired the Gunners to a over their Belgian opponents to take charge of Group F.

The 18-year-old's brace in three-and-a-half minutes made him the youngest Arsenal player ever to score to goals in a European game, and took his tally to four goals in three games since joining from Ituano for £6million in the summer.

Martinelli was utilised in a central role at the Emirates - but despite his star showing up front, Arsenal boss Emery still reckons the Brazilian is a winger, not a striker.

Emery said: “He prefers to play as a left winger - he also played as a right winger. I am using him as a striker because he played in that position in Brazil.

"Striker is not the best position for him. But the first thing in his mind is to help us.

"Tonight his performance and his aptitude was amazing.”

Martinelli has had to wait for his chances, with the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of him in the pecking order.

He also scored twice on his previous outing, starting and finishing the scoring in Arsenal's 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest last week.

Emery has urged Martinelli to be patient as awaited more opportunities, and insisted he knew the teenager would perform once he was unleashed.

"In the pre-season he was perfect all the time with us, playing, training," said Emery.

"I spoke with him to be calm because when his opportunity arrives to play if he continues training with that hunger I think he is going to do well. Tonight confirmed that."
