Saliba, Tierney, Zaha - Unai Emery's Arsenal summer transfer priorities explored

Arsenal are facing one of their biggest summers in recent memory.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League, the Gunners have a transfer kitty of around £45million - a figure which could certainly prove to be a stumbling block in today's market.

The north London side have already completed one deal in the shape of Gabriel Martinelli, but if the club's hierarchy get their way there'll be plenty more where that came from.

Wheels are slowly beginning to turn at the Emirates Stadium, but it's time for action.

Here's a look at what Arsenal's transfer priorities were at the end of the 2018/19 season heading into the new campaign, and how they're getting on as they work towards their targets.

A central defender

Arsenal's defence has been their Achilles heel for several years, and Unai Emery is determined to finally address the problem.

The likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Konstantinos Mavropanos have all left much to be desired on occasions in the centre of defence, with a leaky back-line costing the Gunners a place in the top four.

That means that the signing of a reliable defender is arguably top of the summer shopping list.

Have they solved the problem?

In a word, no.

The club are reported to be in discussions with Saint-Etienne regarding a move for 18-year-old central defender William Saliba, who could command a fee in the region of £25million.

The French side have recently appointed a new manager who say that selling Saliba is not 'a necessity'.

However the lure of playing for a club like Arsenal will likely work in their favour if Saliba makes his desire to move clear.

Who could Arsenal sign to solve the problem?

Several others have been linked, but it's Saliba who remains the number one target.

The likes of Gary Cahill and Samuel Umtiti have also been linked, but the latter would almost certainly be out of Arsenal's price range.

A left back

While a fully fit Hector Bellerin has made the right flank his own, the Gunners are hoping to find someone to do the same on the left.

Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal currently compete for the spot on the left, but it seems that neither is exactly the sort of player that Unai Emery is after.

That is why the Gunners are determined to find a solution.

Have they solved the problem?

No, but they're certainly working on it.

Arsenal are very much interested in Celtic's Kieran Tierney who looks increasingly likely to make the move to north London after showing what he's about at Parkhead.

It's reported that a deal would cost in the region of £25million, and while this expensive for a club with Arsenal's budget, it's probably about right given the state of the market at present.

Who could Arsenal sign to solve the problem?

Kieran Tierney is very much the number one target.

With Kolasinac and Monreal currently at the club, filling the left-back slot is perhaps seen as a desired target as opposed to an essential one.

But make no mistake, Arsenal won't hold back in making the deal happen if the terms are correct.

A central midfielder

Another position that is seen as a real priority after a high profile summer exit.

Aaron Ramsey's move to Juventus was a real sucker-punch for the Gunners who allowed him to walk away for nothing, but now they have the huge task of replacing him with limited funds.

Doing so is going to be very difficult.

Have they solved the problem?

Allowing Ramsey to leave the club has caused a big problem in the middle of the park.

While Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira are first team regulars, Arsenal will be hoping to add a more advanced option to the midfield pack to help the side moving forward.

Creative midfielders cost money, and that's where Arsenal are struggling at present.

Who could Arsenal sigh to solve the problem?

The problem at the moment is to do with finding the right player for the right price.

Nabil Fekir, Dominik Szoboszlai and Dennis Praet have all been linked but there's been little to suggest that any deals are close to being done.

Whether this changes as the summer progresses, or if other targets become available, it may be a case of remaining patient on this one.

A winger

A position that Arsenal seem most determined to strengthen.

The Gunners were a little short of quality from wide areas last term, and so signing at least one quality winger or forward is among Arsenal's top priorities.

The likes of Alex Iwobiand Henrikh Mkhitaryan could challenge for these places, but the hope is to sign a star who can make the position his own.

Have they solved the problem?

Not yet, but they're certainly working on it.

A number of players have been linked with a move, but as you're realising there's a familiar theme in the transfer market, and that's the financial aspect.

A wide man of the calibre to challenge for a place in the Champions League will come at a price and with an overall transfer kitty of £40million, Arsenal are finding it tough.

Emilano Martinelli has already signed for the Gunners, but at 18 years of age it remains to be seen whether he'll be ready for the demands of the first team.

The same can be said for Reiss Nelson who impressed in the Bundesliga last term. If he can recreate that form then he may be the man to give Arsenal a real transfer boost.

Who could Arsenal sigh to solve the problem?

A number of players have been linked, however most come in way above Arsenal's desired price point.

The likes of Nicolas Pepe and Wilfried Zaha are all target, however they're all likely to cost large sums, while Yannick Carrasco and Bournemouth's Ryan Fraser are unlikely to come cheap.

The hope is that prices can be reduced, or some sort of deal can be agreed before the end of the summer, but this could be an area that goes the distance.
