Unai Emery's latest Villarreal injury update could have big impact on Nicolas Pepe and Arsenal

Nicolas Pepe might just be relishing Arsenal's Europa League semi-final second leg with Villarreal.

The Gunners will be looking to try and overturn a 2-1 deficit against the Yellow Submarine when the two teams meet for the decisive second leg at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

The big lifeline for Arsenal from the defeat in Castellon was the away goal scored by Pepe from the spot, and it could be the Ivorian winger who makes the difference overall in the tie.

That's because Villarreal have some trouble in the right-back position, where Pepe will likely be attacking having impressed on the left side of the Arsenal attack at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Juan Foyth pulled up in the first leg with a hamstring injury having caused Arsenal all manner of issues from right-back, marauding forward, and it has since been confirmed he has suffered muscular damage to his hamstring.

That should rule the Spurs loanee out for Thursday, and likely second choice right-back Ruben Peña, has already been ruled as a doubt for Villarreal's La Liga clash with Getafe on Sunday.

Unai Emery said in his pre-match press conference: "We will have our last session today (Saturday), we are going to see how they play to take the decision on the starting XI we select.

"We are looking for a starting XI that allows us to compete with Getafe. We are going to be thinking of this game, and what Getafe bring.

"We are going to evaluate it. We are without [Juan] Foyth, we are going to see what happens with [Ruben] Peña, the rest of the squad are well, apart from [Manu] Trigueros due to suspension."

Fortunately for Villarreal, they are very well stocked at the full-back position on both sides, having three options on the left and right.

If Peña does not return, three-time Spain international Mario Gaspar, who has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United, will step in, and he could even be a candidate if Peña is back.

Either way, Pepe will be glad to see Foyth is out given how well the Argentine played on Thursday, and he might just get a confidence boost at the expense of Villarreal heading into Thursday.
