Unai Emery's five choices for Arsenal captain with decision following Nottingham Forest clash

Arsenal manager Unai Emery famously prefers to have a captaincy group in his teams rather than just one man leading the side.

And while Granit Xhaka has been the man Emery looks to so far this season when it comes to taking the armband, there are problems growing.

Emery's previous captaincy group was decimated this summer. Laurent Koscielny headed the group, but unexpectly left for Lorient during the transfer window, exiting the club with a lack of goodwill.

Petr Cech was next in line, but his retirement was seen a long way in advance, with Bernd Leno recruited and eventually edging him out as first choice keeper over the course of last season.

Following the goalkeeper was Aaron Ramsey, who also bid farewell to the Emirates Stadium in the summer, leaving on a free transfer to Juventus after the club failed to meet his requirements over a new deal.

That leaves just Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka still at the club - though there are issues with this particular duo as well.

Ozil has long been ostracised by the Gunners fanbase for not living up to his billing as one of the world's top playmakers - let alone Arsenal's highest paid star.

And it would be difficult to find many Arsenal fans who believe Xhaka is the future of the club, given a series of lacklustre displays over the course of his tenure as captain.

Emery stated when the Premier League transfer window that his preferred captaincy group would consist of five Gunners players, though since then he was dealt another blow with Nacho Monreal leaving.

"At the moment we have three captains: Xhaka, Mesut and Nacho, and I want to take two more because my opinion is the same as it was in the pre-season with five.

"I want to be with my squad clearly to have two more. At the moment we have three captains and I think they have the capacity to give us possibilities as captain."

With Ozil and Xhaka the only two players remaining, Emery is set to announce the club's captains following the Carabao Cup game against Nottingham Forest.

But who other than Ozil and Xhaka could be among them?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The preferred choice for Arsenal correspondent James Benge, Aubameyang leads by example on the pitch and has garnered praise throughout the club for his actions off-field, particularly on this summer's pre-season tour.

One of the leading candidates to replace Xhaka as captain, let alone join Emery's leadership group.

Bernd Leno

The keeper has solidifed his place as No.1 keeper at the Emirates Stadium, and though Emi Martinez offers strong competition, the Germany international is all-but guaranteed to start in the club's biggest games this season.

Hector Bellerin

A true fan favourite following his graduation from the youth academy after an early move from Barcelona, Bellerin would likely become a popular captain among the fans.

He has now been at the club for eight years, giving him seniority over a number of the other candidates, and is set to return to the first team against Nottingham Forest after recovering from a serious knee injury.

David Luiz

One of the older players in the Arsenal first team, the former Chelsea and PSG star can offer a wealth of experience on his CV, and though there are doubts about him from time to time, he has been part of both Premier League and Champions League winning sides.

Sokratis

Has taken the armband this season following a Xhaka substitution, but is far from guaranteed a place in the starting line up with Rob Holding returning from injury.

While starting games is not necessarily a barrier to being part of Emery's group, the Greek defender is one of a number of players whose Arsenal career is likely on a downward trajectory given his age.
