Unai Emery's big hint over Gabriel Martinelli as Henrikh Mkhitaryan prepares to leave for Roma

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks set to leave the Emirates Stadium.

The Armenian is swapping the Premier League for Serie A, and is close to signing a season-long loan with Roma, ending a disappointing spell with the Gunners.

Since joining the club in January 2018, the midfielder has played 59 games, scoring nine goals and providing 13 assists. So far this season, the 30-year old has made three appearances, including replacing the injured Alexandre Lacazette in the second half on Sunday's North London Derby.

Mkhitaryan has been used both in the attacking midfield and wide positions during his time at the Emirates, meaning that Unai Emery will have to look to replace the creativity in the squad.

And there is one particular player who could benefit massively from Mkhitaryan's imminent departure.

Gabriel Martinelli was a summer arrival, joining from Brazilian side Ituano.

Despite making his Arsenal debut as a late substitute in the Premier League opening game against Newcastle, the 18-year-old has not been included in the squad for the past two league games.

Upon his arrival it was thought that Martinelli may be a player for the club's development squad, but Emery has added the winger to the official list of first teamers this weekend, meaning that the Brazilian is likely to get more first team minutes this season.

Following the sale of Alex Iwobi to Everton and Mkhitaryan's expected departure, Martinelli is likely to be fighting two other young players, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith-Rowe for a place in Emery's team, although competition also consists of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe.

It is likely that Martinelli will get more of a first team chance during competitions such at the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
