Unai Emery's Arsenal fears over transfer mistakes ring true after latest humiliation

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery's fears over a lack of leadership at the club appear to be ringing true after yet another defeat on Sunday night.

The Gunners were beaten 1-0 at the Emirates by relegation battlers Burnley last night, their fourth consecutive home loss, breaking a 61-year record.

Arsenal now sit down in 15th place in the Premier League after their worst start to a top-flight season since 1974-75.

One man who was no stranger to feeling the heat at the club is previous manager Emery, who was sacked just over a year ago, before being replaced by Mikel Arteta.

In an interview earlier this year, the Spaniard raised concerns about the attitude of the majority of the squad and a lack of leaders after several clear outs of the older players.

"Preparations were good and everyone was committed,” Emery told The Guardian. “But some players had a mentality that says one day ‘yes’, one day ‘no’, when in football it has to be ‘yes’, ‘yes’, ‘yes’ every day.

“People were happy but something was missing. “I told the people running the club. And then there were decisions that didn’t go well.

“Mistakes were made, and as coach I take responsibility for mine. For example, all four captains left. Ramsey had decided he was going.

“It would have been better for the team if he had continued, and for me. Petr Cech was retiring; fine.

“But I wanted Laurent Koscielny to stay, Nacho Monreal to stay. All those leaders went, which makes the dressing room something else.

“We signed [Nicolas] Pépé. He’s a good player but we didn’t know his character and he needs time, patience. I favoured someone who knew the league and wouldn’t need to adapt.”
