Arsenal won't renew Unai Emery's contract as troubles deepen

Under-fire boss Unai Emery is working on borrowed time at Arsenal and his tenure will reportedly not last beyond this season after the club refused to renew his contract.

Transfer guru Duncan Castles has revealed the news on the latest Transfer Window Podcast amidst continuing unrest over results and performances at the Emirates club.

It comes on the heels of Tuesday's revelations that Granit Xhaka has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang taking over following the Swiss international's confrontation with fans after being subbed in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Arsenal sit fifth in the Premier League table but languish 14 points behind leaders Liverpool despite a summer of spending that saw a number of top-quality recruits, including Kieran Tierney and Pepe, arrive in North London.

Castles said: "He's definitely under severe pressure. He's got difficult games coming up at the weekend with Leicester City on a remarkable run of form and a number of Arsenal supporters arguing that Brendan Rodgers should have been the man that Arsenal appointed after Arsene Wenger.

"A number of supporters are now arguing that Arsenal should go and recruit Rogers as an immediate replacement for Unai Emery, as difficult as that would prove to be.

"Arsenal's official position as I was briefed this week is 'we are not looking for a new coach'.

"That's according to an Arsenal spokesperson but the word in football is very different.

"The very well-sourced information we have is that Arsenal are preparing the ground in case they have to change the manager during the season or at the end when his contract expires.

"The suggestions are that they do not intend to extend his contract regardless."
