Unai Emery reveals what Josh Kroenke told him amid speculation over his Arsenal future

Unai Emery says he has the backing of Josh Kroenke as he battles to arrest Arsenal's recent decline and manage the difficulties around club captain Granit Xhaka.

Kroenke, son of owner Stan Kroenke but widely seen as the most influential figure at the Emirates Stadium, was at the ground on Sunday to watch Arsenal's 2-2 draw whilst his father was at Wembley as his Los Angeles Rams convincingly beat the Cincinnati Bengals.

As is usual when Kroenke visits the Emirates - an increasingly frequent event - the director spent time with Emery in the aftermath of the defeat as well as head of football Raul Sanllehi and managing director Vinai Venkatesham.

There was plenty for the Arsenal hierarchy to mull over after another frustrating result that was marred by Xhaka goading supporters who had booed him as he made his way to be "substituted". One matter that was not up for discussion, however, was Emery's future.

"We are responsible, the club and I," Emery said. "We know our responsibility is to help everybody, and also when we are making some mistakes to recognise it.

"Sunday for example, after the match, Josh Kroenke was also in the dressing room speaking with me. We were speaking for 10 minutes about the situation but all the time helping each other.

Unai Emery says Granit Xhaka was wrong to swear at fans

"He's supporting me, he's supporting the players, we were talking about the circumstance with Granit Xhaka, saying that he was wrong and we need to manage that with him.

"And yesterday the same, it was the day off for us and the players but we were here also, I was here and also I was speaking with Raul, with Edu, and also speaking with Xhaka. But now preparing the match tomorrow is the most important, but also we need the time managing different situations."

Aside from Emery's comments the club hierarchy are understood to still be supportive of the Arsenal head coach despite growing fan frustration after a run of two wins in eight Premier League games that has the Gunners four points off the top four.

Inevitably results will dictate whether that stance changes in the coming weeks and defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City would lead to ever greater pressure from a fanbase that has grown frustrated with the stale football that too often has defined Emery's approach.
