Unai Emery responds to Arsenal fans booing Granit Xhaka in Aston Villa win

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has responded to the Gunners fans that booed Granit Xhaka during the victory over Aston Villa on home soil.

Xhaka was subject to a bit of hostility from a selection of fans as the Gunners captain played 72 minutes in the 3-2 win over Villa.

The Swiss international is no stranger to criticism, after receiving plenty in his early season with the north London side and some at the start of this season.

During the win over Villa at the Emirates the midfield enforcer received yet another yellow card, adding to his growing collection of almost 100 in his career.

And after being booed during the match, Emery has jumped to the defence of his midfielder.

In his post match press conference the French boss said: "We are professional, the coach, the players. He knows he can receive criticism.

“We need to be mature and experienced to continue working. The next match is another challenge for the team.

“For me he is a very important player, I am going to support him. His commitment and behaviour is great.”

"We need our supporters. We need them helping each player. Our responsibility is to transmit our quality.

“He played very well on Thursday, last week in Watford . Today I changed him because he played for 90 minutes.

“Xhaka is a very important player for us. He has a big commitment and he is improving. I am not asking people to support him but I am sure he is going to achieve the best things if the supporters help him.”

Xhaka was made the Gunners club captain this season after Laurent Koscielney left the club to return to France
