Unai Emery pleads with Arsenal fans after Granit Xhaka feels wrath of the Emirates

Unai Emery has called on Arsenal fans to offer more support to his players after Granit Xhaka was targeted during the Gunners' 3-2 victory over Aston Villa.

Arsenal sealed a thrilling comeback win at the Emirates Stadium despite going into half-time a goal and a man down following Ainsley Maitland-Niles' red card.

Nicolas Pepe equalised from the spot before Wesley immediately restored Villa's lead on the hour-mark, but late goals from Calum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured three precious points for Emery.

One slightly sour note for Arsenal was the reaction of the home fans to Xhaka's substitution, with ironic cheers greeting the captain's departure.

Xhaka has proved a divisive figure at the club, but Emery was full of praise for the Switzerland midfielder.

"My opinion is we need our supporters and we need our supporters helping each player," he said.

"Today I changed him because he played 90 minutes on Thursday. I preferred a fresh player. But for me he is a very important player for us.

"He has a big commitment here. I am sure he is going to achieve the best things. We are professional. He is an experienced player.

"He knows sometimes we are criticised. We need to be mature and continue working. I am going to support him. He's a good player."
