Unai Emery names Granit Xhaka permanent Arsenal captain

Unai Emery has made Granit Xhaka Arsenal's permanent captain, according to reports.

The Spaniard introduced a pool system when he took the reins at from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in 2018, and rotated between five skippers.

The five players selected were: Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Xhaka.

Three off these players have now left Arsenal, leaving only Ozil and Xhaka as candidates.

German midfield Ozil has done little to convince Emery he deserves a place in the Gunners' first team this season, let alone wear the captain's armband.

And according to BBC Sport, Emery has decided to scrap the 'five captains' idea and just hand Switzerland international Xhaka - who has skippered the Gunners in every game so far this season - the armband on a permanent basis.

Rob Holding recently spoke out about Emery's unusual way of selecting a captain at Arsenal, revealing he gets the players to vote.

Holding told Four Four Two: "He likes his five captains. We all did a vote the other week so we'll see what happens and see who gets named.

"It was just write names down and then give them to the manager and he will go through them obviously with his input and we'll see what happens.

"I have no idea [when an announcement will be made], but there is a lot of leaders in that team who are helping each other out and pushing each other on.

"Now that we've got these five captains that the manager has brought in it's spreading the leadership group rather than having one person to dictate it.

"You're getting more input, it's generating a good environment."
