Unai Emery launches end-of-season inquest into Arsenal's Premier League collapse

Unai Emery is carrying out an end-of-season inquest into why Arsenal finished the campaign in disastrous fashion.

Emery saw Arsenal blow a glorious chance of reaching the Champions League as they won just one of their last five Premier League games and also lost the Europa League final.

Gunners boss Emery has been asking players, staff and his coaches for answers, clues and their views as to why Arsenal appeared to run out of steam in the final run-in.

Emery is known for his tough and demanding coaching sessions and trying to ascertain whether fatigue became a factor or if it was a reflection of mental weakness in the squad.

It is believed that he has been alarmed by the drop off in statistics from a season when Arsenal exceeded expectations for much of the campaign - only to fall away at the final hurdle.

There will be some serious soul searching about what the squad needs this summer as Emery knows he will have to sell before being able to buy with only around £40m to spend after they missed out on a Champions League windfall.

Emery wants a box-to-box midfielder to replace Aaron Ramsey, is keen on Bournemouth ’s Ryan Fraser and also wants to shake up his defence.

Barcelona are interested in Sead Kolasinac as a back-up player, Laurent Koscielny wants a contract extension but could go if the right offer comes in while Arsenal would like to offload Shkodran Mustafi.

There has been interest in other players with Inter Milan heavily linked to Granit Xhaka but one of the first things Emery did after coming in was to tie the Swiss midfielder down to a new deal.

Long-term injury absentees Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding will return next season but the depth and balance of the squad remains a concern and a potential reason why they ultimately fell short.
