Unai Emery hints at new Arsenal role for Lucas Torreira after Frankfurt display

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has hinted that Lucas Torreira could be used in a more advanced role after he impressed in the Europa League victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Uruguay midfielder has played predominantly alongside Granit Xhaka in a two-man midfield since arriving from Sampdoria in the summer of 2018.

But the 24-year-old enjoyed a more attacking role against Frankfurt on Thursday night, floating from box to box and leading a number of counter-attacks.

Indeed, Torreira could have ended up on the scoresheet only for the midfielder to squander two chances - first blazing over from six yards and then being denied by goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

Emery heaped praise on the diminutive midfielder and believes Torreira has the necessary attributes to play further up the pitch.

"Tonight he played very well and this season it's the first match that he was feeling physically very good," Emery told reporters.

"He was able to go from box to box and I want to use his quality."

Mesut Ozil was left out of the travelling party to Germany, with Emery later clarifying he was being rested for Sunday's match against Aston Villa, while Dani Ceballos only made a brief cameo from the bench.

After highlighting Torreira's energy and ability in helping Arsenal press their opponents, the Spaniard suggested he may prefer to use him in the advanced role in the future.

"His qualities are that he can give us good pressing, and he can win the ball high up the pitch to give us the possession to score. He did that tonight," he added.

"After, we need someone with the ball and in his position, he can help us with the build-up."
