Unai Emery 'faces dressing room revolt' with stars angry he didn't back Granit Xhaka

Unai Emery is facing a dressing room revolt for failing to back Granit Xhaka after he was booed off the pitch by Arsenal fans on Sunday, according to reports.

The Switzerland international responded badly to supporters initially cheering ironically when his number was called before booing.

It seems fans were frustrated the club captain wasn't getting off the pitch quickly enough in a game they weren't winning and made their frustration known.

Xhaka began by cupping his ears, shouting "f*** off" and removing his Arsenal shirt before storming down the tunnel.

After the match Emery spoke to the press about the incident and admitted Xhaka was in the wrong, but stopped short of revealing whether he'd be stripped of his captaincy.

"He was wrong. We need to stay calm, speak to him internally about that. We are working with the club and the players to play under pressure," said Emery.

"We are going to speak with him because the reaction was wrong. We are here because we have supporters. We work for them and need to have respect for them when they are applauding us and criticising us."

According to The Sun, Arsenal launched a disciplinary following the incident, with Emery phoning Xhaka and asking him to apologise to the fans.

Xhaka is allegedly unprepared to do this and is facing being stripped of the captaincy.

The report adds that the midfielder's Arsenal team-mates are unhappy with the treatment Xhaka received from the fans and believe the manager should have backed him publicly.

Emery used to have a pool of five captains at Arsenal, but after three candidates left in the summer he put it to a changing room vote.

Swizterland international Xhaka won the vote, with his team-mates selecting him as the best man to lead the Gunners on the field.
