Unai Emery explains why he picked Mesut Ozil to start as captain against Everton

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has said he picked Mesut Ozil to play against Everton as the German fit the system for the game at Goodison Park.

Previously this season, the Spaniard has cast doubt over the playmaker's suitability to play the kind of football that the ex-Sevilla boss wanted to see from the Gunners.

He was left out of an away match against Bournemouth due to concerns that he would not be able to keep up with the intensity of the encounter.

Emery has also called upon Ozil to make himself more available to the team when he is needed to perform following a number of minor injury problems.

The 30-year-old was even given the armband for the encounter on Merseyside as he lead Arsenal out as captain for a game that offered the visitors a chance to move up to third place in the Premier League table.

"[Ozil] played in this system and he's helping us like another player," Emery said before kick-off. "Today in the first XI we chose the players who are used to this system.

"The last matches away we played well and had good results. We want to continue with those performances, playing with confidence. The opposition are very well in this moment.

"Every match we need to win. Today is the same. I am looking to play with confidence, concentration. We are working well this week. We need the first XI and the substitutes."
