Unai Emery distances himself from Newcastle managerial role

Villarreal boss Unai Emery says he knows nothing about any links with the vacant Newcastle position.

Former Arsenal manager Emery is one of the names linked with the Magpies as they look to replace Steve Bruce in the St James' Park dugout.

Emery became the bookmakers favourite last week with pressure growing on the Newcastle owners to appoint a new manger.

The Magpies are six points adrift from safety and are without a win in all competitions.

The Spaniard had been widely tipped to be Bruce's successor at St. James' Park, but gave an interesting update at his Champions League press conference.

Addressing rumours linking him with the Magpies, Emery said: "I don't know anything about Newcastle."

Emery won the Europa League with Villareal last season and has enjoyed the majority of his success in his native country.

The 49-year-old won three consecutive Europa League titles during his time with Sevilla which prompted a move to PSG.

The Spanish coach won everything there is to win in France, including the Ligue 1 title, but was pipped to the post by Monaco in 2016-17 which is seen as a major failure during his time in Paris.

Emery moved to Arsenal in 2018 but endured a difficult time in North London. He did, however, guide the Gunners to the Europa League final, only to lose against Chelsea.

He's enjoyed a better spell back in Spain and his recent comments suggest he's happy at Villareal.
