Unai Emery was told prior to the international break that he has the backing of the board at Arsenal.
A draw with Southampton in the match straight after the two-week break, courtesy of a last-gasp Alexandre Lacazette goal, may have changed that somewhat as pressure intensifies around the Spanish coach.
There is a plethora of speculation around Emery's position at the club, with links to a number of other managers in Europe.
No decision about sacking him is imminent from the Arsenal hierarchy but Emery is fast running out of allies at the Emirates.
Arsenal want to give their head coach time to turn things around, do not want to sack Emery mid-season and hope that the head coach can ride out the storm. However, there is an acknowledgement at the club that things simply cannot go on as they are.
Such are the doubts around the head coach’s ability to turn things around, it is increasingly a matter of when, not if, Emery loses his job.
But while he may have lost that backing from those above about his ability to turn things around, he maintains the support of the players in the dressing room.
Or so he says.
football.london revealed earlier this month that several younger members of Arsenal's first-team squad are confused by Emery's management and they do not appear to be alone.
Lacazette scored twice against Southampton including the stoppage time equaliser, but the French striker was seen engaging in what looked like a heated row with his manager earlier in the second half.
The exchange happened during a delay when Southampton had a player down injured and added to the several on-pitch incidents in recent weeks where players have visibly questioned or disobeyed their head coach in forthright terms.
But Emery says the players are behind him.
When asked if the players believed in him, he said: "Yes of course. They show that.
"I believe in us, I believe in the players. I know I am going to work very hard to come back to the performance."
