'Unacceptable' — Manchester United fans fume at two players after Saint-Maximin Newcastle goal

Manchester United fans have voiced their anger at conceding the opening goal to Newcastle early on at St James' Park.

Allan Saint-Maximin struck first blood for the hosts after seven minutes, the Magpies capitalising on a mistake by Raphael Varane, who had returned to the line-up after two months out due to injury.

United fans took to social media to air their disgruntlement with their side’s poor start, also blaming captain Harry Maguire for allowing the shot, which was directed by a helpless David de Gea.

Some supporters aimed specific criticism at Varane while others felt Maguire should have done better in defending the break, after poor defending also saw him concede a chance after 90 seconds.

@JonnyFX1: Varane absolutely must do better we expect far more from him!

@MikeLUHG0: Maguire stood there pointing. But let's blame Varane. Sounds about right.

@utdarena: We’ve seen two errors from both Maguire and Varane which is unacceptable.

@terryflewers: Maguire wasn't great, but that was on Varane

Johyan: Can you imagine the outrage if it was Maguire who made that mistake instead of Varane?

@Kaylan_fut: What do all these coaches see in Maguire?

The goal was the 25th goal United had conceded in 17 league matches this season. Newcastle had won just one of their 18 Premier League games prior to the match.
