Una Healy will replace The 2 Johnnies to present RTE's New Year's Eve countdown

Una Healy will replace The 2 Johnnies to present this year's RTE New Year's Eve countdown.

The Saturdays singer will be coming to viewers live from the Donnybrook studio at 11.45pm Friday night to ring in the New Year.

Una will be joined on the half-hour show by Lyra, Mick Flannery, Susan O'Neill and stars from sports and comedy.

This year's show is sure to have a large audience of viewers from home this year as current government restrictions mean people will not be able to head out for this year's countdown.

The mother of two will appear on scenes from 10.45pm, presenting a prerecorded special of 'The Heart of Saturday night' before the countdown goes live.

Una, alongside her co-host Loah, will present the hour-long programme, which will feature performances from Mary Black and Nathan Carter.

RTE had initially planned to broadcast the New Year's Eve show from Dublin Castle this year with The 2 Johnnies as its host, but unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the show was cancelled.

The Tipperary comedy duo was supposed to be joined by Picture This, Lyra, Pat Short and Ultimate Hell Week star Ray Goggins.

Organisers had hoped The 2 Johnnies could host a show at the indoor studio, but the plan didn't work out, with RTE bosses saying they hope to work with the pair in the future.

The full New Year's Eve lineup on RTE will also feature the Mrs Brown's Boys New Year's Special, which will air at 10.10pm, and Callan Kicks The Years, which will begin at 9.10pm.

Following the countdown show's ending at 12.15pm, the 1991 movie City Slickers will be shown.

Other channels have also put together their own lineup for the evening.

Virgin Media One will be ringing in the New Year with the Graham Norton Show, which will feature guests such as Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, Jessica Chastain and Claire Foy, with music by Cush Jumbo.

TG4 will also be airing fantastic music on We Banjo 3 – Live in Dublin, which was shot at the Pearse Lyons Distillery.

BBC1 will screen 'Big New Years and New Year's Eve Party' with a host of special guests, and BBC2 will have music from Ed Sheeran and Lulu, among others.
