Una Healy 'feels like she's in a girlband again' ahead of new RTE hosting gig

Singer Una Healy says she feels like she’s in a girl band again as she prepares to co-host a weekend music show on RTE.

The mum of two will team up with Kildare musician Loah, real name Sallay-Matu Garnett, to present The Heart Of Saturday Night.

Tipperary native Una, 39, said: “I feel like I’m in a girl band again.

“It’s great, because I came from being in The Saturdays – a group of five completely different girls – and it just worked.

“And I love to be part of a team. That’s one thing about being solo. I miss that element of having the girls and someone to bounce off.

“With this, I love to be co-presenting because it’s a whole different dynamic. We bounce off each other and it’s like... Girl Power.”

The pair will present a six-part music series featuring talents including Imelda May, Kodaline and Bell X1. Una said she was thrilled to be involved because she recalls playing tiny pub gigs. She told the Irish Independent: “I feel like we’re very lucky to be in the room with such icons.

“I remember being in a bar one night, sometimes there’d be a rowdy crowd in and I’d do covers of these drinking songs to keep them entertained.

“Then, other nights, there’d be two or three people in. I used to sing my own stuff at those gigs and I used to close my eyes and pretend I was on Other Voices with the likes of Bell X1 and Declan O’Rourke.”

Revealing that she and Loah were writing music together, she teased: “We already have an idea and a working title.

“[Loah] threw out a phrase and I said, ‘That’d be brilliant – that’s a great title’.

“I went up to my room when we were going to bed and a melody came into my head so I hummed it into my phone.

“I think we’re both good collaborators. I can’t wait to start writing again.”

■ The Heart Of Saturday Night begins airing on RTE One on Saturday, July 24, at 9.30pm.
