Spiraling violence between Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, is "escalating towards a full-scale war," the UN envoy for Middle East Peace, Tor Wennesland, said Tuesday.
"Stop the fire immediately," Wennesland said after Palestinian militant groups fired hundreds of rockets towards Israel, which also responded with hundreds of airstrikes.
"We're escalating towards a full-scale war. Leaders on all sides have to take the responsibility of de-escalation," Wennesland said.
The UN Security will hold emergency consultations Wednesday on the escalating violence between Palestinians and Israelis.
Wennesland is expected to brief the 15 council members virtually at the closed meeting, which is being called at the request of China, Tunisia and Norway.
