The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman, has painted a grim picture of human rights in the country.
In his latest report, Rehman referred to the continuation of executions, hanging minors, violating women's and minorities' rights, restricting freedom of thought and expression, and harsh conditions of prisoners, as well as suppressing assemblies and associations.
He mentioned the violence used in protests that erupted in November 2019.
He called on the Iranian authorities to “ensure that prompt, thorough and effective investigations are undertaken by independent and impartial bodies into all deaths in custody and reports of torture or other ill-treatment and that those responsible are held accountable.”
He urged the Iranian government “to release all those detained for legitimately and peacefully exercising their freedoms of opinion and expression, association and peaceful assembly and their right to collective bargaining.”
Rehman will present the report at the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council that will meet from February 24 to March 20 in Geneva.
