The Yemen presidency revealed that it received guarantees from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that his envoy would stick to the Hodeidah deal.
The announcement was made following a meeting between United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo and President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi in Riyadh earlier this week.
"Hadi received assurances from UN Secretary-General that his envoy, Martin Griffiths, would abide by implementing the Hodeidah deal in accordance with international resolutions and Yemeni law," head of Hadi's office, Abdullah al-Alimi, said on Twitter.
During the meeting, Hadi and DiCarlo discussed Griffiths’ work, the way forward for implementing the Stockholm agreement and for returning to dialogue to reach a political solution to the wider conflict in Yemen based on the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative and its implementation mechanism, the national dialogue outcomes and all relevant Security Council resolutions.
Al-Alimi on Tuesday described the talks between Hadi and DiCarlo as "fruitful and constructive.”
For her part, the UN official thanked Hadi for his government’s commitment to the full implementation of the Stockholm deal, which was reached between the legitimate government and Iran-backed Houthi militias in December.
DiCarlo told Hadi she would stay in contact with the government to make sure that peace is moving forward.
She also noted that the presence of UN teams in Yemen would serve to offer any help, adding they were not planning on staying indefinitely in the country.
She also asserted the UN’s commitment to achieve peace in Yemen.
Griffiths will present his briefing on Yemen to the Security Council on June 17
On Monday, the council said it fully supports the envoy, calling on the parties to engage constructively and continuously" with him.
Griffiths has come under sharp criticism from Hadi, who accused the UN envoy of siding with and legitimizing the Houthis.
