UN Draft Resolution Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Britain presented on Monday a UN draft resolution to the Security Council decrying the Iranian-backed Houthi militias’ attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

The resolution asserted that such “attacks represent a threat to the Kingdom’s national security, as well as a wider menace to regional security.”

In its proposed plan, Britain encourages a political solution to the Yemeni crisis and it stressed the UN’s “total support” to envoy Martin Griffiths.

A diplomatic source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Kuwait had asked to introduce main amendments on several items of the draft resolution.

It called for replacing talk of “preliminary progress” in the implementation of the redeployment plan in Hodeidah with a paragraph that more realistically describes the situation on the ground. It suggested adding an item that encourages all parties to realize the first phase of the first plan of redeployment based on the agreed processes, revealed the source.

Kuwait began 11 days ago its June presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

Other amendments covered holding a prisoner swap deal, lifting the Houthi siege on Taiz and respecting the implementation of the Stockholm deal, including the ceasefire in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

Separately, the Saudi-led Arab coalition in Yemen demanded on Monday that the United Nations offer explanations about the supplying of dozens of armored vehicles to a demining center that is accused of being backed by the Houthis.

It also expressed its surprise that the UN described the Houthis as “partners.”
