'Umpires should be accountable': Decision to cancel cricket match reviewed

New South Wales opener Daniel Hughes believes the right call was made to abandon a one-day cup game against Victoria at North Sydney Oval, but the boss of Cricket NSW wants to see the umpires disciplined.

Cricket Australia is investigating the decision to call off Sunday's match 26 overs into Victoria's run chase, due to an unsafe pitch.

Hughes said it was a disappointing way to end New South Wales' finals hopes, with the Victorian Bushrangers awarded a bonus point.

But he believes the pitch was dangerous.

"I think so yeah, I think ball is rearing off a length, guys on the front foot getting hit on the glove," he said.

"There was four or five guys getting hit on the gloves. So I think the wicket was dangerous and the right decision was made."

Officials awarded a bonus point win to Victoria under the Duckworth Lewis System — a formulation usually used to determine a winner after a match is rained out.

It ended the Blues finals hopes.

"It was disappointing but that's the way it ended," Hughes said.

"I think there's an investigation going on with Cricket Australia and some other guys.

"We'll just wait and see what comes out of that, but I think the right decision was made with player welfare."

However Cricket NSW chief executive Andrew Jones used social media to call for the sacking of the officials who abandoned the game.

"That is a ridiculous decision and the umps should be held accountable," Jones posted on Twitter.

Cricket Australia has said Tuesday's match at North Sydney Oval between Western Australia and the Cricket Australia XI will go ahead but it will be played on an adjacent wicket.

As will the women's Ashes test match, which begins next month.
