What’s Going To Happen
Charlotte has been fun.
The 49er offense rolled up Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State with a balanced and explosive attack, but the defense has been a distant rumor. A trip down the road to Clemson next week will get a nice paycheck, but win this, and there’s hope to get to six wins even with a battle of a slate the rest of the way.
UMass is in full-on do-over mode under new head coach Walt Bell. Rutgers was totally shut down against Iowa, but it managed to look like the Kansas City Chiefs against the Minutemen. That was bad, but the 45-20 loss to Southern Illinois was the real disaster.
UMass can’t push the ball down the field and can’t spread the ball around, but the defense is the bigger problem allowing 538 yards per game so far. Charlotte will come up with a third down stop, and UMass won’t.
The 49ers can’t stop the run, but the Minutemen won’t be able to take advantage of it. The Charlotte offense will seem like it has the ball all game long.
