Ultrafast broadband plans for four Lanarkshire areas

Ultrafast broadband is now to be provided in four new Lanarkshire locations as part of an £8.7 million investment in the county’s connectivity.

Exchanges at Glenboig and Stepps in North Lanarkshire and at Cambuslang and Rutherglen in South Lanarkshire are to be upgraded to provide access to full-fibre broadband in a major programme by Openreach.

Work will take place over the next five years to improve a total of 48 urban exchanges, reaching 400,000 homes and business premises across the country.

It follows last month’s announcement that 11 exchanges in Lanarkshire, including Caldercruix, Shotts, Strathaven and Lesmahagow would be similarly improved as part of a programme to reach rural and “some of the country’s hardest-to-serve communities”.

Robert Thorburn of Openreach said: “It’s great that we’re able to reveal another huge broadband boost with these additional urban locations.

“We’re reaching more communities than ever and our team of highly-skilled engineers, alongside our build partners, are working hard to deliver some of the fastest and most reliable broadband available anywhere in the world.

“Our investment and commitment to Scotland will help to underpin economic recovery, stability and a stronger, more equal society.”
