Ultrafast broadband boost for two more Glasgow neighbourhoods

Two more Glasgow neighbourhoods have been connected to ultrafast broadband.

Virgin Media has connected 6,000 homes in Barmulloch and Cardonald, which will bring the UK’s fastest widely available speeds to the area.

As part of its Project Lightning network expansion programme, Virgin Media is expanding its ultrafast broadband network, bringing average top speeds of 516Mbps to residents and small businesses.

The company is also pledging to bring next generation gigabit broadband to its entire network of 15 million homes by the end of 2021.

The broadband boost for Barmulloch and Cardonald residents means their connection will be 10 times faster than the local average.

With ultrafast broadband, a standard HD movie file (5GB) can be downloaded in less than a minute and a half, compared to 15 minutes on the average local connection. Meanwhile, a 25GB console game can also be downloaded in seven minutes, compared to an hour and 10 minutes on the average local connection.

Colin Brown, Regional Director for Scotland at Virgin Media, said: “It is fantastic news for residents in Barmulloch and Cardonald that we have finished our expansion and they can now access ultrafast broadband and our entertainment services."
