Ultra Tour of Edinburgh takes place today with runners taking on gruelling 57km route around city

Daring fitness fanatics will be taking part in the gruelling 57km Ultra Tour of Edinburgh today (Sunday).

The massive event arrived in town at 7.30am this morning with some road closures in place around the start line at the Royal Mile. Traffic was restricted at Lawnmarket and High Street between George IV Bridge and Cockburn Street from 6.30am.

After leaving the Royal Mile runners will set off on a massive loop of the city – heading as far north as Newhaven and as far south as the Bonaly Reservoir in the Pentlands. The route also sees runners pass Drylaw, Craigleith, Murrayfield, Slateford, Kingsknowe, Colinton, Greenbank, Blackford Hill, Craigmillar Castle and Duddingston Loch. They'll eventually finish up outside the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

The Ultra Tour of Edinburgh is staged by Rat Race Adventure Sports in order to support Children with Cancer UK.

Organisers say the course "weaves 57km through streets, alleyways, onto hills, up crags, past monuments, museums, seats of Royalty, government and up and down 3000 feet of ascent and descent".

Most roads along the route will not be closed and it is the responsibility of runners to navigate the course safely.
