Ultra-rare £2 Mayflower coin sells on eBay for £115

A £2 coin that was never officially released into circulation and was never legal tender has sold on eBay for almost £115.

The Mayflower £2 coin was created by the Royal Mint in 1994 and was the first £2 coin with a bimetal design - a golden ring around a silver centre.

But it was a "practice-like" piece, reports The Mirror, and has been dubbed "the coin that never was".

The coin sold for £114.75 following a three-day auction.

It features an image of the Mayflower ship on one side, but the coin was never officially released into circulation and was never technically legal tender.

Instead, they were issued in presentation packs for commemorative reasons, with around 4,500 sent out.

Change Checker explains: “Trial pieces are used by the Royal Mint to test the minting process of a new coin, and to help the automatic vending industry re-calibrate their machines in preparation.

“Other than the handful given as samples for testing, this trial £2 coin was only ever issued in a presentation pack and was billed as the United Kingdom’s first bi-colour coin.”

Bi-metallic style £2 coins that we know today were first released in 1997 - three years after this practice piece.
