Ultra rare £2 coin sought by collectors sells on eBay for £115 - and you could have one too

A rare £2 coin from 1994 that was only meant to be a trial has sold for £115.

Created to be a 'practice-like' piece, it has been branded by experts at Change Checker as the 'coin that never was'.

The coin sold for £114.75 following a three-day auction.

As the Mirror reports, the Mayflower £2 coin was created by the Royal Mint in 1994 and was the very first £2 coin with a bimetal design.

The rare coin has a golden ring around a silver centre, making it very distinctive.

It is so rare, it is extremely valuable to coin collectors but it isn't completely impossible that one could appear in your spare change.

While they were never officially released into circulation or considered technically legal tender, 4,500 were sent out in presentation packs for commemorative reasons.

Change Checker explains: “Trial pieces are used by the Royal Mint to test the minting process of a new coin, and to help the automatic vending industry re-calibrate their machines in preparation.

Bi-metallic style £2 coins that we know today were first released in 1997 - three years after this practice piece.

It is important to always do your research before buying any coin on eBay or auction sites as many fakes do float around.
