Ultimate Ears produces some of the best-sounding and rugged portable Bluetooth speakers for the money. The company is also known for offering a splash of color and texture in a market that’s dominated by black plastic. Now you can choose one of the company’s most popular speakers, and completely customize its appearance, so your music doesn’t just sound good, it also looks unique.
Ultimate Ears Makes Great Portable Speakers
Before we get into the whole customization thing, I want to point out that Ultimate Ears makes some really great portable speakers. The company has won me over during a series of reviews over the past few years. I’ve reviewed the WONDERBOOM, MEGABOOM, MEGABLAST and most recently the MEGABOOM 3.
Every one of these speakers proved to be rugged and highly water resistant (each ended up spending time in a pool as part of my testing). They offered long battery life, and provided energetic 360-degree audio with satisfyingly powerful bass performance. They also stood out from the pack visually — two of my review units have been a bright blue and one was red. But customization with myBOOM Studio goes far beyond picking from the usual color options Ultimate Ears offers.
myBOOM Studio
Ultimate Ears recently launched myBoom Studio. Available online, and at select T-Mobile store locations in Chicago and Miami, myBOOM Studio lets you design a completely customized myBOOM 3 speaker – which is functionally identical to the popular Ultimate Ears BOOM 3 Bluetooth speaker.
Virtually every visible component of the speaker can be customized: the fabric, end caps, volume buttons, spine and loop, plus you have the option of adding up to 20 characters of text. Most components have eight different colour options to choose from, and there are a dozen unique fabric patterns.
I enlisted my daughter to help design a myBOOM 3. The process is easy, and myBoom Studio instantly displays results as you pick colors so you can see what your creation is looking like.
Compared to the stock BOOM 3 (which is available in seven colors), the myBOOM 3 carries a $30 premium, with a $179.99 price tag. Delivery does take longer. Ultimate Ears says expect to receive a myBOOM3 within three to four weeks of ordering.
Random Speaker Generator
If you want a funky speaker but have no faith in your design chops, myBOOM Studio offers a one-button random speaker generator. You can keep pushing the button until a design that appeals to you pops up. At that point, you can either buy the myBoom 3 as-is or fine tune the customization a little.

After my daughter designed her version of the perfect Boom 3, we discovered that Ultimate Ears does not yet ship the custom speakers to Canada (where I am based)…
They promise that is coming in the summer, though. So once Canadian shipping is a go, we’ll re-order that custom design and show what the $30 upgrade looks like. While I’m at it, expect a full review of the Ultimate Ears myBOOM 3 as well. The BOOM 3 is one prominent member of the Ultimate Ears lineup I haven’t yet gone hands-on with, so a review is overdue.
